Compared with the taut, allegorical power of The Tracker , and the bleak vision of revenge in Alexandra's Project , there's something much calmer and more leisurely about this work, even if it's a tale of life, death and atonement.

It is based on a short novel by Luis Sepulveda, and set in a remote Amazonian location: the old man of the title is Antonio Bolivar Richard Dreyfuss , who has lived most of his life in a small riverside hut. His wife died soon after they arrived there: a fleeting memory and a photograph are all that remain of her. This is a tale, in part, of redemption through reading. Unlike, for example, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, a recent film about the power of literature, the books at the centre of this movie are not high art but mass-market romance novels.

Yet Antonio reads them as intently and alertly as the most diligent of critics, savouring the implications of their titles, subjecting a final line - "It was a kiss of impassioned intensity, a kiss to remember their lives by" - to the most exacting, deconstructive scrutiny.

He borrows these books from a young woman, Josefina Cathy Tyson , who works for the corrupt and exploitative local mayor Timothy Spall : this literary exchange seems to be developing into something more significant. At first, the film seems as if it will wrap itself in the genial warmth of reading and romantic deferment, but a grimmer mystery emerges. A female jaguar is stalking and killing humans outside the village: she is crazed by the loss of her cubs to a hunter given an illegal permit.

As she comes closer and closer, the mayor decides to organise an expedition to hunt her down. He insists that Antonio comes with him: he also commandeers the local dentist Hugo Weaving , a debonair, cynical figure who provides an ironic running commentary on events. Spall's character is a comic monster, venal and stupid, who exercises power and authority: on the expedition, however, he's a dangerous loose cannon, whose authority can no longer be tolerated.

Antonio can't remain detached or distant: he has to draw on the knowledge of the jungle he acquired when he spent time with an indigenous tribe, who shared their insights and wisdom with him. The experience haunts him still. A new Antonio emerges from the narrative - a figure with the ability to find and dispatch the jaguar, and a past for which he needs to make amends.

As Antonio, Dreyfuss radiates serenity, and seems to relish the restraint of his performance: when Antonio is transformed into a man of action, however, he's a little less convincing. And, although the narrative shifts dramatically, and events take on a new urgency, there's still a disconcertingly dreamlike quality about the film, as it makes its genial way towards resolution and redemption.

I read this book in August and I really enjoyed it, so I thought it was time I finally made a review for it. So when people start turning dead, and obviously killed by a wild animal, the people ask for his help. But Bolivar is old now, and all he cares about is the book that is waiting for him in his small house.

Australian director Rolf de Heer's fondness for making films about isolated characters on the fringes of society gets an elegiac work-out in "The Old Man Who Read Love Stories," a gentle and immensely likable adaptation of the novel by Luis Sepulveda. By David Stratton. Filmed entirely on jungle locations in French Guiana, and centered on an engagingly mellow and subtle performance by Richard Dreyfuss, this French-Aussie co-production presents a hefty marketing challenge but could post solid rewards in niche venues before a decent ancillary life where, unfortunately, its spacious visuals will be severely circumscribed. Instead, he presents a character study of a simple man who finds his pleasures in the small things of life. In a stilted opening sequence, an unseen female narrator introduces Antonio Bolivar Dreyfuss , a ish man who lives in El Idilio, a village located beside a tributary of the Amazon. Bolivar, we are told, came here when he was a young man to help colonize the jungle.

The Old Man Who Read Love Stories. Luis Sepulveda, Author, Peter Bush, Translator Houghton Mifflin Harcourt P $ (p) ISBN

Нахмурившись, Беккер набрал второй номер. И на другом конце сразу же сняли трубку. - Buenas noches, Mujeres Espana.
