The Greetings to all fly fishers. A lot of exciting changes are occurring in our international organization. We are addressing the question “Why be a member of our organization?” There are many benefits of being an international organization exclusively dedicated to fly fishing. We gain considerable leverage with educational benefits and can affect policies that allow our passion for fly fishing to influence public opinion on conservation issues that perpetuate our goal to preserve fly fishing for all fish in all waters. Below is a brief summary of some of the ongoing changes. We encourage your comments and suggestions and greatly appreciate your support.
1. Change to Fly Fishers International (FFI) from International Federation of Fly fishers (IFFF). FFI web site
After the retreat in Denver in 2015, a strategic plan was developed and changes in our organization were proposed. These changes were discussed with the IFFF Executive Committee, the Board of Directors and Council Presidents Committee. The initial changes were implemented to coincide with retirement of President and CEO, Phil Greenlee, followed with hiring of Len Zickler as new President and CEO and election of Tom Logan as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Brickhouse Creative was hired to develop a plan for branding and marketing. The web site has been redesigned and many of the changes in the organization are on the web site. www.flyfishersinternational.org The new name and logos, website and other related changes were publicly announced on April 11, 2017.
2. Member and club benefits from FFI
The membership categories have been reduced from 23 to 8.
Affinity Marketing Group has been contracted to offer all members discounts on hotels, car rentals, vacations, mobile medical screening, supplies with Office Depot, health insurance, prescriptions, long term care insurance, and vision care.
Additional Resources to members include online publications such a Flyfisher magazine, ENews, The Loop, Tying Times, and the Osprey.
A new Affiliate club category established. The new Affiliate club has a different structure than the current Affiliate club. The new Affiliate is based on the total number of members and the dues have 3 tiers: 1- 49 members $200; 50 - 99 $350; and 100 or over $500. A current Affiliate club can remain in its current structure or convert to the new Affiliate category http://flyfishersinternational.org/Membership/Clubs/AffiliateClubInformation/tabid/373/Default.aspx
The Charter Club category provides maximum benefits to clubs in which all members are FFI members. Benefits include tax return filing by headquarters, becoming a 501C3 and most reasonably-priced club insurance. http://www.flyfishersinternational.org/Membership/Clubs/HowtoBecomeaCharterClub/tabid/275/Default.aspx
The Rod Incentive Program is being changed to the Merchandise Incentive Program where clubs can gain credits toward purchasing discount merchandise from several FFI partners. The expanded program will provide a large range of product selection including rods, reels, vices, fly tying materials and much more. The program will be launched in May 2017.
3. FFI initiatives
FFI Board member Dave Peterson has been appointed to chair the Conservation Committee. FFI will be active in national, state and local conservation issues. A partnership with the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) has been established and additional relationships are being explored. Support for local grants are strongly encouraged and funding is available. Grants should be submitted to FFI Conservation Committee and details are on the FFI website. http://www.flyfishersinternational.org/Conservation/ConservationOverview/tabid/778/Default.aspx
b. Foundation and fund raising
A Fundraising Policy and Plan has been approved by the BOD and is being implemented. It will focus on standard fundraising practices for soliciting donations from external sources and encourage members to participate in the process. We will address the question "What is the organization doing for me?" The FFI has been restructured to address the needs in education and conservation.
c. Education - Learning Center
A Learning Center Planning Committee has been developing an initial 12-hour Educational Curriculum for members that will be introduced during the 2017 Fly Fishing Fair. The Learning Center will focus on fly tying, fly casting, conservation, and fly fishing. The curriculum and supporting materials is intended to be of use for Councils and Clubs to use for planning and implementation in total or part for members in our home clubs.c. d. Fly tying levels of achievement and FFI program
The Fly Tying Group has developed a Fly Tying Skills Awards Program with three award levels - Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Criteria have been established for tying collections of prescribed fly patterns and submitting them for evaluation by Program Evaluators and Reviewers for Award.. The purpose of the Program is to provide instruction and encouragement for members to expand their knowledge of methods and materials for tying flies and assisting in the preservation of the art form. For details see the FFI Fly Tying Skills on the FFI website.
e. Membership initiative and rewards to Councils
FFI has initiated a rewards program for the 17 Council to promote membership in FFI. The Councils will receive monetary rewards for the number of new members and retention of current members.
